Introduced in 1955, the Bentley S Series Continental was the successor of the well-known R-type Continental. The Continental chassis, being the sportier version of the standard chassis, allowed clients to choose their own coachbuilder. H.J. Mulliner, one of the few remaining coachbuilders, created the 2-door Sports Saloon which proved to be a popular choice among customers. The design 7400 was produced between 1955 and 1959, with a total of 97 examples made in RHD. It provided ample space for four adults and was one of the fastest 4-seater cars available at the time.
This Bentley S1 Continental chassis was delivered to H.J. Mulliner in April 1956. The build of the 2-door saloon body to design 7400 took a full year, and the complete car was delivered to its first owner, David Robinson Esq., in April 1957. Mister Robinson made his fortune renting out electrical goods in the 1950s, a time when many families could not afford to purchase outright. After selling his company, he moved into horse racing and became a hugely successful horse breeder. After three years of ownership, he traded the car in for a new Bentley S2 Continental.
The car went through several hands before being purchased by a Japanese collector in 1995, who commissioned an extensive restoration before exporting the car to Japan. Ten years later, the car returned to the UK and was re-commissioned by several marque specialists, among which noted Rolls-Royce and Bentley specialists P&A Wood, who have serviced the car in recent years.
